FAQ

What sorts of topics are included in the TMP curriculum?

Topics range from art theory and drawing, portfolio development, tattoo history, and styles, various tattoo equipment and supplies, proper sterile procedure and safety skills, industry and studio do’s and don’ts, social media management, photography skills, and so much more. Students will also have hands-on experience tattooing artificial skin before moving to actual tattoos. It would be impossible to teach you everything within just five weeks, but our goal is to give you the best possible introduction to the world of tattooing and the skills to move forward in this industry if you so choose. Tattooing is an occupation where you should always be continuing to learn, whether you’re 3 or 30 years into your career. We will always be available to reach out for advice and consulting, and invite you to be a part of an alumni community with resources and opportunities to keep learning.

What kind of experience/skills/requirements are needed to apply?

TMP welcomes applicants over eighteen years of age from any career path and experience level, while a background in art is ideal. With a good attitude, willingness to learn, dedication, and a passion for art and tattooing, we feel confident our program is perfect for you.

Is there an age requirement?

All applicants must be 18 or over to enroll in TMP.

How do I apply?

If you’re interested in the program and/or have questions, please fill out our interest form, which can be found HERE. Please Submit via email at [email protected]. You will be contacted upon receiving your submission.

Please also feel free to contact the studio via call or text at (516) 324-3518.

Do students need to bring their own supplies and/or materials?

All necessary tattooing supplies and licensing (machines, needles, sterile/safety equipment, exams, etc.) are provided during the 5 weeks of the program, and students are welcome to seek advice from our instructors on purchasing more equipment, machines, and supplies during the program. Students will also be provided with printouts corresponding to daily lectures, a three-ring binder, a studio tee shirt, and a journal for drawing and taking notes. We do recommend you bring your own drawing and art materials, such as pens and pencils.

What is the cost of the Tattoo Mentorship Program?

TMP has a total cost of $6,000.00 per student per session. Tuition is required in full before the start of the program. Payment options are available, and all supplies and licensing fees are included.

Is there a payment plan available?

A payment plan of two parts will be available, and acceptance into the program will not be granted until Tuition is paid in full. All major Credit Cards, Cash, Money Order or Certified Checks are accepted. All payments must fully clear before the program session starts. Please inquire for more information.

I've heard confusing things about tattoo schools. Is TMP right for me?

The fact of the matter is that every program is different; there isn't yet an industry standard, and 'school' is a misleading term. The TMP is a mentorship based program, not a school, designed to be completely in-person and hands-on, not virtual. There is a 1:1 instructors to attendee ratio, and attendees will receive an individualized and comprehensive experience. An abundance of resources and advice will be available to all alumni.

Is there a remote option available for TMP?

No. TMP is exclusively in-person, located at Obscura's studio in Long Beach, NY.

Do I need a license or certification to participate at TMP?

Blood-Borne Pathogen (BBP) certification will be included in the program's tuition, and is required by our studio's local laws to tattoo physical clients. This cost will be included in the program. Students will be granted a three-year license to work exclusively in Nassau County, NY. We are more than happy to help you look into your local laws and certifications if you're hoping to continue working outside of Nassau County post-program.

What is the program's schedule? How many hours/days per week does it entail?

Part one (Week 1-3) of the program will be held Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays, from 10am to 5pm (with daily lunch breaks.)

Part two (Weeks 4 & 5) will also be three days each week. Week 4 will still be Monday-Wednesday, while Week 5 will take place on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday to accommodate the program's "Walk-In-Days".

Session specifics may vary in regard to the Nassau County Dept. of Health (NCDOH) BBP certification schedule and holidays. Please inquire about other possible program running times.

What does the Tattoo Mentorship Alumni Program look like?

After completing the program, Obscura's door will always be open! If you're looking for post-program consulting, industry advice, portfolio development, or even guest spot appearances, these options may be available to you.

We will even be offering a series of continuing education workshops (designed specifically for alumni, although open to others) covering specialty tattoo styles and techniques. Please see our workshops and alumno page for more info!

We look to provide future insight into all of your tattoo needs, creating a community for the new generation of tattooers. Please inquire for more details.
